6.5 Conflict Between East and West
Because of many differences, Romans and Byzantines argued with each other almost all of the time.
For example, in 753, Emperor Leo III banned all the use of religious images in every Christian home and church. This caused major, conflict, but luckily the ban of images was lifted in 853.
Another thing that caused conflict was the crowning of Charlemagne. He was crowned by Leo III, the pope, which angered many Byzantines.
The final reason was that the Byzantines wanted to restore their power of the church. The patriarch of Constantinople closed all churches in Constantine that followed western rites. Pope Leo IX of the Roman Catholic church went to Constantine and excommunicated the patriarch. After so many arguments, the Eastern Orthodox and the Roman Catholic churches became separate.
